RAMMELLZEE (stylized RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ, pronounced 'Ram: Ell: Zee'; December 15, 1960 – June 28, 2010) was a legendary artist, Gothic Futurist, musician, and theoretician who became a cult icon in New York City. From his appearance in Charlie Ahearn’s classic film “Wild Style” to his dense cosmology of written manifestos and infamously theatrical performances, RAMMELLZEE's work in visual art and music has served as a benchmark for pushing the boundaries of creative expression. His landmark contributions to the track "Beat Bop," created with K-Rob and produced by Jean-Michel Basquiat, are considered a cornerstone of hip-hop, influencing artists such as Cypress Hill and the Beastie Boys.
RAMMELLZEE developed the philosophy of Gothic Futurism, a radical vision that transformed language into a weapon in an intergalactic battle against the oppressive nature of language. His Letter Racers—sculptural vehicles representing armored letters—embodied this vision, while his Garbage Gods—elaborate full-body armor suits—served as powerful avatars for his philosophies, personifying the fusion of futuristic technology and ancient symbolism. His Tribeca studio, the Battle Station, was where he crafted his otherworldly creations, merging medieval history with futuristic imagination. RAMMELLZEE’s relentless pursuit of his unique vision transformed him into a mythic figure, whose life and work remain an enduring testament to the power of imagination and creative defiance.
