STAFF 161 grew up in the worst neighborhood in all of New York, “Fort Apache,” in the South Bronx during the 1960s. It was there he assembled a graffiti club called the EBONY DUKES, that would go on to be one of the most celebrated crews in the history of graffiti. There had been two graffiti crews before the EBONY DUKES, but the EBONY DUKES were the first piecing crew on the trains and dominated the subways in 1973. STAFF 161’s biggest innovation was the creation of the conceptual car, usually a train that the artist has used for a canvas. In one such piece he painted a cannon shooting his name out of it, in another large scale painting he rendered a hand with a spray can in it coming out of the ground, these trains helped to pave the way for others who wanted to exploit their drawing skills on the New York City Transit Authority. He le the writing movement in 1974 and resurfaced almost 50 years later to tell his story and keep his name alive.
Care Instructions: Machine wash cold water, inside out, with like colors. Tumble dry low. Do not beach. Warm iron if needed.
