Artepaño: Chicano Prisoner Kerchief Art features 71 artworks by Latinx artists working in the context of the American penal system. A paño is a standard fifteen by fifteen-inch cotton handkerchief transformed into a work of art by prisoners that identify as Chicano, Mexican-American, Latino, and/or Hispanic.
The artworks range from a valentines to chilling threats, to grand biographical narratives. The majority of the work is from the collection of Reno Leplat-Torti, collector of the largest assemblage of kerchief art in the world. Mr. Leplat-Torti's selections are peppered with additional works from the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art collection and the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum.
