TATS CRU was formed in 1980 by Wilfredo “BIO” Feliciano along with friends BRIM and MACK, later joined by Hector “NICER” Nazario and Sotero “BG183” Ortiz. The teenagers, who met in art class at James Monroe High School in the Bronx, painted subway cars together under the name T.A.T. CRU, changing it to TATS CRU in the early ’90s, once affiliated with rapper Fat Joe (“CRACK”) and his TERROR SQUAD crew. Eventually TATS CRU became Tats Cru Inc., a commercial enterprise commissioned by musicians, nonprofits and corporations alike for their prismatic and highly stylized murals. Their murals stand as representative of New York City.
