ROCKY 184

Writers Corner 188 NY 2019

ROCKY 184 was a 13-year-old writer living in Washington Heights while dating a 16-year-old from the Bronx named STITCH 1 in 1969. Rocky lived on 184th Street and often met her boyfriend around the corner, out of her father’s view, at 188th Street and Audubon Avenue. Rocky 184 and STITCH 1 wrote each other’s names on the walls there and soon writers from all boroughs followed suit, establishing WRITERS CORNER 188 as New York’s first graffiti crew and meeting place in 1971. ROCKY 184 eventually joined a girl gang called Hellified Sisters while STITCH 1 joined the Savage Nomads. They went their separate ways but WRITERS CORNER 188 (WC 188) endured as a both a trailblazing location and a crew.
