Richard Hambleton
Vancouver, Canada
Canadian-born Richard Hambleton moved to the East Village in 1979, where he proliferated his “Shadowman” character on New York City walls throughout the ’80s, then painted the series in European cities. The reclusive artist once articulated that the silhouettes might represent watchmen, danger, post-Holocaust bodies or even his own shadow self. Hambleton died in New York in October of 2017.
