Martha Cooper – Beyond The Streets

Martha Cooper

Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who, along with Henry Chalfant, published Subway Art in 1984. The book helped spread graffiti globally and is affectionately known as “The Bible” by writers. Cooper grew up in Baltimore and started taking pictures at age 3, as her father and uncle owned a camera store. She lives in New York City but travels widely to shoot urban art and culture. Cooper’s iconic captures are viewed as ethnographic treasures and her prints are highly collectible, having shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of the City of New York; the 2015 Venice Biennale; and many galleries around the world.
