Chris “DAZE” Ellis gained notoriety for painting the New York subways in the mid-’70s while attending the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. Exhibiting alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, his first group show, Beyond Words, was held at the Mudd Club in New York in 1981. There he sold his first work, an impromptu collaboration with Basquiat. DAZE’s studio work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Groninger Museum, Netherlands; the Ludwig Museum in Aachen, Germany; and more. Ellis lives and works in New York.
