When graffiti amasses in a public location, a counter campaign usually emerges, whether in the form of law enforcement-designated vandal squads, transit task forces or citizen vigilantes. Deterrent efforts often take visual form, be they municipal signs or artist-created posters, sometimes emulating the very medium anti-graffiti groups purport to discourage.
Historical signage is from Roger Gastman’s private collection.
