Join us for an unforgettable evening on August 22, 2024, as BEYOND THE STREETS and NeueHouse host a conversation celebrating two pivotal figures in the realm of Chicano culture—Estevan Oriol and Teen Angel. The discussion, led by renowned actor Emilio Rivera, and featuring both Estevan Oriol and curator of Teen Angel’s estate, David De Baca, is part of the ongoing exhibition Estevan Oriol & Teen Angel: Dedicated to You, currently on view at BEYOND THE STREETS Gallery in Los Angeles.
Dedicated to You brings together the works of Estevan Oriol and the late Teen Angel, celebrating their profound impact on Chicano culture. Since his emergence as an artist in the early 1990s, photographer Estevan Oriol has been celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Los Angeles, capturing the city's heart and soul with unparalleled depth, authenticity and an exceptional ability to reveal the beauty in places that are often-overlooked. Similarly, Teen Angel’s incomparable work has left an indelible mark on Chicano arts through the late-artist’s groundbreaking publication Teen Angel’s Magazine, which circulated from the 1980s through the early 2000s. The magazine featured artwork, dedications, photographs, poems and articles all focusing on life in the Varrios of California and the Southwest.
This talk will delve into the interconnectedness of Chicano art and the broader social and cultural movements that have shaped the lives of so many in Los Angeles, and around the world. Emilio Rivera, a longtime Los Angeles native with a profound understanding of the city's cultural landscape, will guide the talk, drawing out stories and insights from Oriol and De Baca. Together, they will explore the enduring impact of Chicano influence and its ongoing relevance in today’s world.
